Work on the GAPOA Dam
Some of you who have been attending the Board Meetings and or have been reading the minutes know that we have been working towards getting our dam certified by the VA Dept of Conservation and Recreation for the past several years. We have been working with 3 different Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) Dam Safety personnel and 3 different Engineering firms, which has been a bit challenging. Our current engineering firm, Underhill Engineering, is under a contract to help us work through the process of certification. As part of that work a dam inspection was required and performed in early July. During this inspection several items were identified requiring our action. The most significant requirement was to mitigate a seepage issue identified. An “Inverted Filter” was identified as the structure that would do this. An inverted filter consists of 4 layers, the first being 8” of sand, covered by 8” of #8 stone, followed by 8” of #57 stone and finally topped off with a layer of lager stone.
In all, 24 dump truck loads of material were used amounting to slightly over 300 tons of sand/rock. Wesley, our property manager, oversaw the entire project and worked every day using his equipment as well as utilizing a backhoe contractor to do work his equipment was unable to perform. This was not only necessary but expensive. The total project cost slightly over $21,000.00. Hopefully we are well on our way to full certification. Several other reports and studies need to be performed/completed prior to that.
The document in the link attached shows the work that was completed up to now with not only the installation of the inverted filter but also some work required to the end of the spillway and the removal of 4 trees identified as being too close to the dam.
